Rugby League in The West Midlands

While outside of the traditional heartland areas for rugby league, the Midlands has many community clubs and of course a semi-professional Championship club, the Midlands Hurricanes.

The Shrewsbury Lions operate as a satellite club of the Telford Raiders – this means we operate under the same safeguarding, insurance and overall governance structure. The Raiders are an established amateur rugby league club that started with juniors in the 1990’s and registered its first adult team in 2002. .

Here is the full range of rugby league playing opportunities the Telford Raiders have established – you may not be aware of it all – as well as the areas we hope to grow into in the future!

Our plan for the Lions is to grow organically, ie add a new u7s squad each year and step up existing squads every September, subject to having sufficient coaches and volunteers of course. This means we would have squads from u7s up to u16s in place by Sept 2026.
